THE BIG WINCH, COOBER PEDY

The Big Winch is one of the few attractions in Coober Pedy you find over the ground. It is a landmark and a symbol of the opal-mining capital of the world. The present winch is a model of the original, which was destroyed by a cyclone in 1986. On the ground in front you can see the remains of the old winch, of which only the handle is left. 
The Big Winch is sitting on the highest point in Coober Pedy, and from here you can view all surrounding landscape, including the picturesque Breakaways.
