AUSTRALIA - THE LAND DOWN-UNDER

MY JOURNEY

South Australia     -     Northern Territory

Kulgera is the first roadhouse you come to in Northern Territory going North along Stuart Hwy. It is a small motel with a little shop, a bar and restaurant combined. The motel rooms outside are mobile. My first night in NT was spent here.

Uluru, formerly known as Ayer's Rock - need I say more?
About 250 km off Stuart Hwy at Erldunda along Lassiter Hwy you find the largest sandstone rock in the world and probably on of the most famous tourist attractions in Australia. At the nearby resort you can enjoy the facilities of a modern holiday place and go for shorter trips to see Uluru or the Olgas.

With its 28.000 citizens, Alice Springs is the main major town in the outback . It has always been an important centre, from all the way back to 1862 when John McDouall Stuart succeeded in crossing the continent. Funny for a Scandinavian was the Winter day temperature, which was over +30C when I was there.

Tennant Creek is another mining-town in the outback, known for its minerals of copper, gold and tin. Like most towns in the outback, it came about as a result of John McDouall Stuart's crossing of the continent in 1862 and was later further developed  during the main gold rush in the 1930's.
