"...and I could not be further from you now with both feet on the ground, but in the dreamtime souls take flight,
and I am closer to you now..."  Ralph McTell

If you like lots of people around you,  noisy tourist machines with dark-skinned, polished waiters offering blue drinks with umbrellas in tall glasses by a pool-side, lush, green vegetation and tanned tourists with skimpy tops in white to enhance their bronze skin, - don't visit the outback.
There is no really green foliage, no smooth looking waiters and not a lot of tanned people, either. The vegetation is rough and harsh with colours closer to grey, yellow and brown, rather than green. And those poor buggers who have let the merciless rays from the sun fry their skin over the years, - not only do they look a lot older than their age, they also often have to see their doctor at frequent intervals to remove spots of re-occurring skin cancer. Water is scarce, temperatures high and distances long. The outback can be a hellish place.

So why live there? Why bother to go there at all?
Because it is has a magic of its own...
