Lyngdal 29.
and 30. April 2005
Country-music comes in many forms, and Kjell Breland and
his boys are into the outlaw sound. I met up with them
for a gig in Lyngdal, some 75 km west of Kristiansand (in
Norway) at the end of April. I actually got the job via sms from the lead
singer's wife, who asked if I was able to join her
husband's band for this particular weekend.
I guess
true
country is kind of on the side of the type of music I
normally work with, but it turned out to be both an
interesting and fun job. As much as I always say I am no
guitarplayer, the guitar always seems to follow me
around these days (forcing me to keep my fingernails
short - damn!), and this gig was no exception. I had to
follow our night's 40 songs on my poor battered and
abused instrument, and had basically only my ear to rely on
there and then to get the chords right. I recon you don't attempt
something like that unless your fingertips are prepped
for it - you need solid callouses, believe me! I still
ended up with a blister on my thumb.
We had three nights'
practicing before the gigs (Saturday and Sunday night),
and I think the band did a great job taking on and
learning my 12 songs for the occasion.

No Name Cowboys - From left: Kjell Breland (lead
vocal, solo guitar) - and the locomotive for the whole
arrangement - , Ole Mk (bass, backup vocal), William Viki
(drummer with exceptional standup comedian qualities!).
The person in skirt is.....well - me.
Behind me a
bit of bonding with the audience - the guy had a
serious wish for William to sing some local hillbilly
song!
