AUSTRALIA - THE LAND DOWN-UNDER

TOP DROPS OF AUSTRALIA

It was German settlers who first brought wines to Barossa Valley in the early 1840's. They came here as a result of religious persecution in their home country, and were soon perceived as very valuable for the European settlement.  They were religious, hard working, sober and persevering people who soon developed their own culture and lifestyle which has remained till today.

In 1847 Johann Cramp planted his first wines at Jacob's Creek, and three years later he could enjoy the first glass of his Carte Blanche. His venture grew to become Orlando Wines, today Australia's largest wine and spirits group and one of the most successful Australian exporters. Their wines are exported to over 50 countries around the world.
Next to Johann Cramp, the wine industry was gradually taken over by a few other of the wealthiest families in the region: Seppelt, Jacobs, Salters, Gramps, Penfolds and Tolleys.

The Jacob's Creek Visitor Centre is a held in a modern, 'steel-and-glass' style. Here you can drop in for a tasting or sit down in the spacious restaurant and enjoy a better meal, overlooking wineyards and the Barossa Ranges .

Another, much younger winery in the Barossa Valley is Peter Lehman Wines. Since its inception in 1979, Peter Lehmann Wines has emerged as one of Australia’s most respected, energetic and innovative wine producers.
Peter Lehmann Wines has earned many medals and trophies along with great accolades from wine judges in Australia and throughout the world.  Now a publicly listed company of international repute, Peter Lehmann Wines is regarded as one of Australia’s pre-eminent wine brands. I was very lucky to get a private tour of this excellent winery.
